On October 22, 2026, the third and final film night in the “Science Meets Fiction – Film & Reflection”(Opens in a new tab) series, organized by the Faculty of Applied Social Studies, took place at the Schauburg Dortmund. The film “Clashing Differences” by Merle Grimme was screened, followed by a sociological analysis led by Dr. Münevver Azizoğlu-Bazan and a discussion with the audience. Prof. Dr. Emra Ilgün-Birhimeoğlu(Opens in a new tab) from the Faculty of Applied Social Studies(Opens in a new tab) moderated the event.
The film “Clashing Differences” as a starting point for the subsequent discussion
The film provided a multifaceted starting point for exploring issues of intersectionality, white or Eurocentric feminism, representation, and social power dynamics. Among other things, the discussion focused on how different forms of discrimination and inequality intertwine and what tensions—but also opportunities for solidarity—arise from this within feminist contexts.
Analysis and Critical Reflection
Together with Münevver Azizoğlu-Bazan and the numerous participants, scenes and conflicts in the film were analyzed and critically examined using concepts from the social sciences. The discussion also focused on connecting the conflicts depicted in the film to current social debates: Who is heard and represented? Whose perspectives are made visible? How can solidarity and collective action succeed under unequal power dynamics?
The lively discussion and the diverse contributions from the audience opened up numerous interesting perspectives and once again highlighted the potential offered by the combination of film and scholarly reflection.
Completion of the funded project
This evening marked the conclusion of the three-part series “Science Meets Fiction – Film & Reflection.” The goal of the project was to use feature films as a starting point for social science analyses, to apply theoretical perspectives to concrete situations, and to create spaces for open, anti-discriminatory discussion outside of regular courses.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Münevver Azizoğlu-Bazan, all participants, our partners, and the project team—especially Loris Wissel from Sunrise Dortmund(Opens in a new tab) and Rebecca Ehlen—for their dedicated collaboration and joint organization of the film series.
The project was funded by internal grants from the Fachhochschule Dortmund and the Faculty of Applied Social Studies.
