BAföG in Germany
According to the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG), students who lack the necessary means to support themselves and their education are legally entitled to individual support for an education that corresponds to their inclination, aptitude and performance. The amount of support is calculated according to the financial situation. Fifty percent of the total funding is granted as a grant and the other half as an interest-free loan.
The Studierendenwerk Dortmund, Amt für Ausbildungsförderung, Vogelpothsweg 85, 44227 Dortmund, isresponsible for counseling and processing BAföG applications from students. Application forms are also available there.
BAföG abroad
It is often worth applying for BAföG abroad if you are studying or doing an internship abroad. In addition to the domestic grant, you can also receive a grant for study abroad allowances (only outside the EU), tuition fees, travel expenses and health insurance costs. The prerequisite is that you have acquired the necessary basic knowledge in Germany for at least two semesters and that the coursework completed abroad can be at least partially credited.
