Thursday: 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Friday: 7:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
The janitor in charge of the hall of residence will check the room inventory with you and draw up an inventory list. Please check carefully that everything is in working order and that nothing is damaged or missing. The list will then be signed. The contact, address and telephone number of the janitor responsible for the respective house can be found on the Studierendenwerk Dortmund website(Opens in a new tab) .
You must also collect your keys from the respective janitor as normal and return them there after moving out. If you lose your key, you will have to pay a fine of 110 €.
Move-in and move-out
Move-in
You can only move in 2 to 5 days after the start of the tenancy agreement, as your room will be cleaned for you in the first few days.
You may only move in and out on working days (Monday to Friday) and not at weekends or on public holidays (e.g. October 3rd, Easter and Christmas).
If you move in and your first rental day falls on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday, you must wait until the next working day to move in. Make sure you find a place to stay at short notice.
Extract
You must move out on the last working day before the end of your tenancy agreement. For example, if your tenancy agreement ends on a weekend or Friday, you must move out on Thursday. If your tenancy agreement ends on a Wednesday, you must move out on Tuesday.
You must hand in the keys to the janitor. He will then check your room. Don't forget to deregister with the City of Dortmund if you are leaving Germany (at the Bürgerdiensten or Bürgerdiensten International - depending on your nationality).

Search for shared apartments
If you would like to live in a shared apartment that you share with other students, then shared apartments (WGs) are a perfect option! They offer attractive and affordable living spaces and apartments in Dortmund and the surrounding area, where you can make friends for life, have fun together, learn new foreign languages or improve your existing language skills and much more! There's something for everyone here! In Germany, many students live in shared flats (WG) in order to share the rental costs. If you live in a shared flat, you usually share a kitchen and a bathroom with other people and have your own bedroom. Renting a room in a shared flat is often cheaper than paying for a complete apartment on your own and usually at least furniture and appliances for the kitchen are already available, so you don't have to buy these things. Nevertheless, you should also make your own contribution and bring something to the shared flat. As a rule, you will only need the furniture for your bedroom and even there it is often possible to take over individual pieces of furniture from the previous tenant or to purchase them for a small amount.
Please understand that the International Office cannot arrange accommodation for regularly enrolled students. You are responsible for finding suitable accommodation for the duration of your studies or for the first few nights. We will of course be happy to support you and provide you with advice and information! We have compiled the most important information, links and tips on finding accommodation and registering in the city for you on our pages.
Here are some online platforms where you can find lots of offers from shared flats and more:
Of course there are many more providers - we can't list them all, so browse the internet and ask your friends and acquaintances where they have found accommodation and whether they can recommend an apartment or a free room!
Also look out for notices in the Fachhochschule Dortmund buildings and ask your fellow students - sometimes they are also looking for flatmates or know other students who have a room available.
Application for shared apartments
Your application should include the following information:
- Name
- age
- Country of origin
- Study program and university
- e-mail address
- Cell phone number
- Part-time job or other type of income
- Information about your language skills
- Attitude towards pets
- Information on whether you smoke
- Any furniture or appliances that you could bring with you to the shared flat, e.g. a washing machine, television, tumble dryer etc.
We advise you to write your application in German. If you write your application in English, you should state that you are learning German or would like to learn it in the future. This will make communication easier. Perhaps your flatmates can also benefit from your language skills - for example, by teaching you English or another foreign language and vice versa? This can also be an advantage for everyone.
After you have sent off your application, make sure that your cell phone is switched on and that you are easy to reach if someone calls you. If you are invited to a viewing appointment, you should reply immediately. You are probably not the only person looking for a room and there are probably other interested parties.
Interesting facts and other tips
House hunting
In addition to the above-mentioned options for finding accommodation, it is worth taking a look at the notice boards at the various Fachhochschule Dortmund campuses and in the university buildings.
You may also find what you are looking for in the local newspapers. Examples:
- Stadt-Anzeiger (free newspaper)
- Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ)
- Ruhr Nachrichten (RN)
- Westfälische Rundschau (WR)
If you have not found a suitable apartment in Dortmund, it is also worth looking in neighboring cities such as Herne, Witten, Herdecke, Schwerte, Essen, Gelsenkirchen or Bochum. Thanks to the good transport connections in the Ruhr area and the student ticket, you can commute easily from anywhere.
Furnishing
In Germany, it is common for apartments to be rented unfurnished. Some housing exchanges allow you to search for furnished apartments. Important: If an apartment is not explicitly advertised as furnished, it is usually not furnished and does not have any kitchen furniture.
However, it is possible to buy second-hand furniture at a reasonable price - either through notices on notice boards or in newspapers, in special second-hand stores, at flea markets and on the Internet. The choice is enormous.
Incidental costs
A basic rent is usually stated in the apartment advertisements. In addition, there are additional costs (water, heating, electricity, telephone/internet connection and broadcasting fee).
