Valid health insurance is mandatory for your entire stay in Germany. Among other things, you will need the proof of insurance for enrollment as well as for the first application for your residence permit and for its subsequent extension.

There are two different types of health insurance in Germany: Statutory and private health insurance. The differences between these two systems are explained in the tabs above - please read the information carefully. Different conditions apply depending on the purpose of your stay and your age.

You must decide for yourself which type of health insurance to take out. We cannot make any recommendations here!

Choosing the right health insurance - your status determines your options

As a general rule, if you are over the age of 30 during your studies in Germany, you can continue to take out statutory health insurance - but you will then have to pay a higher premium. If you have already reached the age of 30 at the beginning of your studies, you must take out private health insurance.

To find the right health insurance, please read the following tabs and the table in the form of a checklist carefully.
