About the project

Background: The teaching research project Oct 2018 to July 2019

Project description - What is it about?

According to a survey conducted by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency (ADS) in 2015, more than a third of the population has experienced discrimination in the last two years.

In this teaching research project, we are investigating the situation of students in the context of discrimination at Fachhochschule Dortmund:

  • How do students deal with discrimination that they experience themselves or that they witness towards third parties?
  • What do they wish for in order to be able to intervene better in cases of discrimination?
  • And also: To what extent are they sensitized to the discrimination they themselves experience against others and what do they need to be able to behave more openly and acceptingly themselves?

In the project, 21 students from the teaching research project (module K11) are researching the topic of discrimination at a theoretical, empirical and practical level over two semesters (winter semester 2018/19 - summer semester 2019): using intersectional approaches, we are looking at the interaction of various social inclusions and exclusions such as sexism, heterosexism, racism and socio-economic inequalities.

Building on the theory, in the empirical part we will conduct a web-based survey of students at the UAS using a questionnaire. The results will be presented to the faculty at the end of the 2019 summer semester and put up for discussion.

Implementation - Who is supervising the project?

The project is being carried out by the Social Medicine and Public Health working group with a focus on gender and diversity at the Faculty of Applied Social Studies (Head: Prof. Dr. Gabriele Dennert).

The following members of the working group were involved in winter semester 2018/19: Malin Houben, Alva Träbert and Cathrin Schmülling.
