Starting April 13, 2026, the library at the Max-Ophüls-Platz location will be open significantly longer than before. This will be made possible by unstaffed hours in the evenings and all day on Saturdays.
This concept is called “Open Library.” From Monday through Saturday, the library will then be open until 10 p.m. —longer than ever before. Saturday hours mark a first for this location.
The library at Max-Ophüls-Platz is the first of the three library locations where the Open Library will be introduced. Outside of service hours , visitors can enter the library with a key, which they can borrow through lending at the front desk in exchange for a signature. For reasons of historic preservation—unlike the other two locations on Sonnenstraße and at Emil-Figge-Straße 44—an automatic door with FHCard registration cannot be installed.
During Open Library hours, study spaces, media, and scanners can be used as usual. There are some minor restrictions on other services due to the absence of staff. Details on this, as well as all other information about the Open Library, can be found here:
Unfortunately, it is not yet clear when the other two locations will be able to launch the new concept. Major conversion work and technical measures are required there, which have not yet been completed. As soon as a start date has been set, the library will provide information on all channels. Until then, you can find the current opening hours for all locations here:
