Kinder-FH invites young researchers

Published

Young researchers can immerse themselves in the world of science at practical workshops and interactive lectures.

Get as smart as a FHuchs: Fachhochschule Dortmund is launching an exciting program for children between the ages of 8 and 12 in the summer semester with the new Kinder-FH.

Originating from the MINT-AG, the program offers workshops and lectures where young researchers can immerse themselves in the world of science. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will kick things off on February 28. Rector Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel explains what chemistry and Lego bricks have in common.

How does the electric eel actually generate electricity? Who can teach a robot to think? And what can technology do to make invisible forces in our bodies visible? There are many exciting questions in science. The new children's FH gets to the bottom of these questions. Children between the ages of 8 and 12 are invited to get a taste of real university life and to research, experiment and discover together with researchers.

Diverse topics from all faculties

The children's UAS program offers a mix of different scientific disciplines. "With this offer, we want to show children how exciting science and research can be," says Sonja Hunscha, Equal Opportunities Officer at Fachhochschule Dortmund. "It is important to us that all children - regardless of their background - have the opportunity to discover their curiosity and experience their first points of contact with the university. Especially in the natural sciences, we want to inspire enthusiasm and break down barriers with the Children's UAS." The combination of lectures and practical workshops allows the children to experiment and develop their own questions.

Kick-off on February 28

The official launch of the children's UAS is the event "What do chemistry and Lego have in common?" on Saturday, February 28, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Sonnenstraße 96 (Room B309). Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel, Rector of Fachhochschule Dortmund, and Sabine Hammer from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering will show how chemistry is all around us and how the coolest things can be invented with the smallest building blocks. The other events usually take place on Fridays at 4 p.m. at the Sonnenstraße and Emil-Figge-Straße locations.
