After last year's premiere, Fachhochschule Dortmund will once again be present at the Dortmund CSD in 2024 and will support the street festival in mid-September. Together with the General Students' Committee (AStA), the UAS is flying the flag and setting an example for diversity and tolerance.
"We are a colourful, diverse university," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel, Rector of Fachhochschule Dortmund, "which is why it is important for us to be part of Dortmund's Christopher Street Day, to show our presence on Friedensplatz and to promote tolerance and openness." Making the diversity of our society visible is an important step towards greater acceptance and the elimination of prejudices. The CSD Dortmund will take place on September 14, 2024. The demonstration will start at 1 p.m. at the main train station (north exit) and then lead to Friedensplatz, where the street festival will run from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.
"Despite a lot of progress, particularly in terms of legal equality, people from the LGBTQ+ community still experience discrimination and violence in everyday life," says Anne Jahn. She is a social affairs officer at the Fachhochschule Dortmund AStA. "The threats from right-wing extremists at the CSD in Bautzen showed us this in a frightening way. That's why it's good and right that Fachhochschule Dortmund is fulfilling its social responsibility and supporting the Dortmund CSD."
Rainbow flags on campus
The Fachhochschule Dortmund will be at the street festival on Friedensplatz in Fachhochschule Dortmund with its distinctive HY vintage car, handing out sunglasses and colorful water ice. In addition to representatives of the AStA, Rector Tamara Appel will also be on site at the HY. Fachhochschule Dortmund will also be flying the rainbow flag at its locations and hoisting the rainbow flag at the Sonnenstraße and Emil-Figge-Straße campuses.
Social commitment also means taking action. There are regular practical research projects on LGBTQ+ topics at the university. For example, an online learning platform has been developed together with the TH Köln, the Cologne clinics and a diverse advisory board to provide medical, nursing and psychotherapy professionals with advanced skills for the healthcare of inter* and trans people.
