Social mobility is considered a central promise of modern societies—yet it is still far too rarely fulfilled. In her new book, Christina Möller vividly describes the struggles, setbacks, and ambivalences of a journey she herself has undertaken: from a secondary school student to a professor of sociology.
Christina Möller combines personal experiences with current findings from research on education, inequality, and social mobility, thereby offering deep insight into the struggles of social mobility. She explores what it means to cross social boundaries, the roles played by pride, shame, and guilt, and why only a few succeed in reaching higher educational and professional positions.
The book makes clear how closely educational success and social background are intertwined, while also highlighting the potential that lies in the experiences of people who have achieved social mobility.
