Laboratory for Lighting Technology (BLT)

Fast facts

Profile

The focus of development work in the BLT laboratory is on adaptive lighting control, taking daylight into account. Here, the artificial lighting is adjusted in terms of intensity and, if necessary, spectral properties to the extent that is optimal for the desired task (e.g. office workplace).

The aim is to develop a lighting strategy with a high level of visual comfort and the highest possible energy efficiency in line with the amount of daylight available.

In the BLT laboratory, various centralized and decentralized measurement methods for recording the amount of daylight are being tested and their influence on the control strategy investigated. The subject of the development work in relation to the control strategies includes the recognition of typical and atypical changes in the lighting situation and appropriate reaction patterns.

Equipment

  • Experimental station with lighting system and daylight simulator
  • Lighting system for workplace lighting with 16 individually positionable and dimmable luminaires (DALI) based on various light sources (fluorescent, LED, halogen, metal halide)
  • Development environment for adaptive lighting control
  • Near-field goniophotometer in separate dark room
  • Other measurement technology: luxmeters, luminance meters, spectrometers, integrating spheres
  • Computer workstations for student work
