NICE Lab 50/50 Nairobi 2024

15.07. - 4.08.2024
Nairobi, Kenya

50/50 means dividing something in half, for example in a deal, a sale or a profit.
In our Summer School, we think about the saying in relation to our everyday lives. What everyday stories does 50/50 tell and what does it mean to us?

NICE Lab 50/50 is a project format at the interface of international education and cultural networking with a special focus on innovative and accessible design tools and techniques offered by digital technologies. The NICE lab 50/50 involved young art and creative professionals with a self-taught background from Vivandani, Nairobi, as well as students from TUK-Nairobi, Kenya and UP-Pretoria, South Africa and Fachhochschule Dortmund, Germany. The mentorship is made up of experts from Kenya, South Africa, Germany and Switzerland.

In this context, 5 input workshops took place:
Creative Writing > Experimental Writing Workshop
Fully Analog > Experimenting and designing with guerrilla printing techniques
Totally Digital > Experimenting with current digital design tools
Typography and Layout > Design basics in typography and layout

The NICE Lab 50/50 is a co-initiative of NICE labs (Flurina Rothenberger, Rahel Arnold) from Switzerland and the Faculty of Design at Fachhochschule Dortmund (Prof. Ulrike Brückner) in Germany. The content and structure of NICE Lab 50/50 in Nairobi was developed together with the participating lecturers, the universities from Kenya, South Africa and Germany as well as the IT company Megasmart, which offers disadvantaged young adults in Viwandani training at the interface of creativity and digital technologies.
