IN SPACES. Jörg Winde. Photographs 1984-2024.
Opening of the exhibition: Wednesday, September 4, 2024, 5:00 pm
Jörg Winde has been photographing interior and exterior spaces for more than four decades in search of places and their stories. His range of subjects includes private spaces, representative spaces, landscapes, industrial facilities and architecture. He questions the spaces, buildings and places created by people and finds images that tell of people without showing them themselves.
Winde's early work is characterized by cool abstraction, later social studies of places on the edge of our perception become central. His curiosity about what is built and arranged leads him to places that are hidden from our view: an attic in Łódź, Poland, a paint booth in the French Château Thierry, the government palace in Belgrade, the periphery of cities in the Ruhr region, mayors' rooms in the German central provinces. Disconcertment and fascination balance each other out in the artistic formulation of his pictures. His creative tools are precise compositions and the play of light.
Jörg Winde works on free themes, which he condenses into series over years, sometimes decades. The selection of individual groups of pictures for this exhibition and their arrangement in the room, regardless of when they were taken, create effective "encounters" with the multitude of themes and photographic methods. The retrospective invites visitors to discover the many facets and contrasts in Windes' work.
