Science Night - Dortmund Night of the Sciences

What the immune system does during a heart attack is one of the most exciting unsolved mysteries in medicine. In the immersive space in the foyer of the Dortmunder U, visitors can use a larger-than-life, digital, three-dimensional model of the heart to experience first-hand how the immune cells act in the inflamed heart tissue after a heart attack.

The project is a collaboration between the storyLab kiU at Fachhochschule Dortmund, which designed and operates the immersive space, and the Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences (ISAS). The aim of this research is to find molecular targets for drugs and thus further develop the medical treatment of heart attacks.

The participants would like to talk to anyone interested about their work as researchers and artists at the Science Night. After the immersive experience, they will be happy to answer any questions.

In the foyer of the Dortmunder U, 4 to 10 pm.

Facts and fiction are often seen as opposites, if not opponents. Facts refer to objectively verifiable truths, are based on observations, empirical data and can be proven by science, documentation or reliable sources. Fictions, on the other hand, are invented stories, spring from the author's imagination or calculation and often contain elements that are inspired by reality but are not congruent with it, which can lead to dangerous hybrid forms in the media (e.g. fake news).

What does this mean for fields as different as immunology and artistic research? Does artistic-aesthetic image data emerge when working with microscopes? How can elements of storytelling or media narration be used to present biomedical results? What are the limits of the narrative presentation of science? What do immunological research and its methods tell us, and what findings result from it?

This will be the topic of a panel discussion with Prof. Dr. Anika Grüneboom (Leibniz Institute for Analytical Sciences), Harald Opel and Lennart Oberscheidt (storyLab kiU at Fachhochschule Dortmund). Moderation: Tobias Bieseke.

In "uzwei", the second level of the Dortmunder U, the exhibition "Hidden Barriers" opens on Science Night. It is a barrier-free exhibition about barriers and where they can be found. Can we see, hear, taste, smell or feel them? Are we aware of them? We encounter barriers everywhere in everyday life - albeit in different ways. Sometimes they are a problem, sometimes they are part of the solution. How do we deal with barriers? How can we overcome them?

In the "DEINORT" project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research at Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, barrier stories from a wide range of people were collected and transformed into exhibitable objects and tangible spaces and exhibits. In the project's real-life laboratory, the Hidden Gallery is transformed into a place of hidden and found barriers. The interactive exhibition will be accompanied by experts on barriers and cooperation partners of the project.

The exhibition "Hidden Barriers"(Opens in a new tab)  runs until October 27, 2024. In addition to the opening on Science Night, the experts from Fachhochschule Dortmund will be on site every Friday from 11 am to 12 pm.

The "Soffi" construction trailer, which has been converted into a sustainability mobile, is parked in front of the Dortmunder U with interactive offers. On the one hand, it is about Fachhochschule Dortmund's research into environmental psychology, and on the other, about how the university looks after its own sustainability and the question: What is a sustainable university? What needs to be taken into account, considered and investigated? Spoiler: A lot!
