Fachhochschule Dortmund Creates State-of-the-Art Learning Spaces

Published

NRW Minister of Science Ina Brandes (front, center) inaugurated the new student workspaces together with University of Applied Sciences President Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel (front, 2nd from left), University Chancellor Svenja Stepper (front, second from left) and Mayor Norbert Schilff (front, left). Guido Baranowski (front, right), Chair of the University Council, offered his congratulations.

Together with Ina Brandes, Member of the State Parliament (MdL) and Minister of Culture and Science for the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Fachhochschule Dortmund opened modern learning and teaching spaces—including student workspaces and multifunctional rooms—on Monday, October 12, 2026.

Office spaces covering an area of approximately 1,200 square meters at the Emil-Figge-Straße location and approximately 300 square meters at the Sonnenstraße location have been transformed into spaces for students: Focus workstations, group workrooms with flexible furnishings, and standing workstations that allow for concentrated learning, whether alone or in a team.

Additional rooms equipped with high-quality technology and versatile furniture are ideal for seminars and meetings. Even the hallways are now much more than just paths from A to B: invitingly furnished gathering areas are perfect for networking and recharging.

Marie Runge (M.) had followed the development process of the spaces and confirmed, from a student's perspective, that they are an excellent place to study on site and work.

Ina Brandes: “Excellent learning conditions”

Minister of Science Ina Brandes: “Our future professionals need excellent learning conditions. The new learning and work spaces at Fachhochschule Dortmund have created environments where students can study with focus, develop solutions together, and advance new ideas. Such investments in modern higher education infrastructure enhance the quality of education and, in turn, the future viability of North Rhine-Westphalia as a hub for science and business.”

“This marks a major and important step toward the future of teaching and learning,” emphasized University of Applied Sciences Rector Prof. Dr. Tamara Appel. “Especially with regard to the future consolidation of our locations on the Emil-Figge-Straße campus, I view this renovation as an important signal to our students: We are putting your needs at the center of everything we do from the very beginning. True to our guiding principle: We focus on students.”

Next-Level Reservation System

Reservations are made through an internal system. Students can book time slots for the study rooms six days a week and unlock the doors using a mobile app. This is made possible by a new locking system and digital door signs at the workstations.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia has allocated approximately 1.55 million euros for the renovation from the “Strengthening Studies and Teaching” Future Agreement.
