The FH team, previously inexperienced in shipbuilding and on the water, does not win the competition - but at least the boat does not sink.
October 1990: Electric Trabi
UAS students build an electric motor into a Trabi with Prof. Dr. Wolfram Peperle. "We want to turn the most environmentally unfriendly car in the East into the most environmentally friendly car in the West," says the professor. With 3.6 hp, the Trabant 501 S can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h and can travel around 50 kilometers at a stretch with its battery.
November 1990: Honorary citizen
Fachhochschule Dortmund may not be a city in its own right, but it now has two "honorary citizens": Jürgen Schroeder, Chairman of the Society for the Promotion of Technical Education, and Winfried Böllert from the Förderkreis Praxisnahe Ausbildung have been particularly instrumental in establishing Fachhochschule Dortmund in the region, according to the statement.
November 1990: Protests
Due to overcrowded lecture halls and a lack of lecturers, students at the UAS take to the streets on November 3, 1990. A really large crowd does not gather on Friedensplatz in Dortmund. However, the UAS management and politicians address the situation at the UAS at the ceremony with Richard von Weizsäcker.
November 1990: Richard von Weizsäcker visits
On November 3, 1890, the Königliche Werkmeisterschule, the predecessor of the Fachhochschule, is opened. It forms the foundation for the Sonnenstrasse campus. In 2021, the BVB training ground will be located there, among other things.
April to October 1991: BuGa logo comes from the FH
Dortmund is awarded the contract for the Federal Garden Show in Westfalenpark for the third time. A UAS student develops the logo for this major event. Martina Spanka's design is colorful and bold and wins a major competition. The success surprises the student. She thought the BuGa organizers would be too "stuffy" for her design, she says. 6,000 marks in prize money was awarded for the colourful, cheeky floral tower.
Summer semester 1991: Smoking ban in the canteen
No more smoking while eating! There is a strict smoking ban in the canteen on Sonnenstraße and this is also strictly monitored. However, students can still smoke in the courtyard (and in other rooms) of the university. In 2010, the converted U-Tower becomes a cultural landmark, into which Fachhochschule Dortmund later moves with the storyLab kiU.
Winter semester 1992/93: Celebrities - Bruno Knust
He has enrolled again. Bruno Knust, alias "Günna", has been studying social pedagogy at Fachhochschule Dortmund for 24 semesters, but spends more time in front of Sat.1 TV cameras, in the BVB stadium, at the Ruhr Nachrichten and in his Olpketal theater. "Günna" remains connected to the FH even after he has exmatriculated. By the way: Bruno Knust also wrote the lyrics to the BVB anthem "Leuchte auf mein Stern Borussia".
1994: New city logo
The city is looking for a new logo and launches a major competition. The jury decided in favor of the design by an FH design lecturer. However, the triangle and circle (middle logo) were rejected by the citizens and filled entire newspaper pages for weeks with letters to the editor full of derision: ">0 looks like greater than zero". Politicians decide on a new round. And Fachhochschule Dortmund wins again, this time with graduates Gabriele Arnold and Ralf Linnemann.

Now they have to buy a WIFI network card for around 40 euros and can then surf the campus free of charge.
June 2004: First plush Porsche
This vehicle causes quite a stir: a real Porsche 924 CC completely upholstered. Plush inside and out. It is the final in the design seminar. The headline "Housewives' Porsche" in the fh press also caused a stir, triggering a minor shitstorm. Incidentally, the three object designers were given the Porsche as a gift for their project - but without the engine. It was then sponsored by a car parts supplier and installed by the three students themselves. Housewife my ass...
WiSe 2005/06: First digital application
Students can apply online for the first time this winter semester. At least in part. In the end, a form must be printed out, signed and submitted together with the certified application documents.
