Wilhelm Schwick: Want to help shape the future

For Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Schwick, Rector of Fachhochschule Dortmund until February 2023, one thing is certain: he would definitely study again today. "We are a tangible and hands-on university," he praises in the interview. At the same time, he expresses clear wishes for the future.

Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Schwick

50 years, so universities of applied sciences are in their prime. What are the greatest UAS achievements to date?

Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Schwick : The universities of applied sciences are more practice- and application-oriented in their teaching than ever before. They have also extended these advantages to their research, thereby scientifically accompanying and actively shaping social change. In addition, universities of applied sciences today offer the complete educational chain of academic training, from bachelor's degrees to doctorates in cooperation. Studying at a UAS is well-rounded.

Why do we actually need so many universities in NRW?

Wilhelm Schwick: Because there are more and more prospective students, and that's no wonder: the demands are growing in many professional fields, and work processes and work biographies are more complex today. An academic education broadens personal horizons and enables our students to develop solution strategies in a wide variety of areas. In addition, the education offered by universities is now aimed at all social groups.

What makes Fachhochschule Dortmund special?

Wilhelm Schwick: We focus on students. The claim is not only a promise to the students, but also a reminder to ourselves to live up to this claim every day. Our roots in urban society and beyond also help us to do this. Networking with stakeholders from Business Studies, politics, science and research. Together, we leverage the region's potential and fulfill our social responsibility. We are a tangible and hands-on university. And a university that continues to develop. We want to help shape the future.

Would you study again today?

Wilhelm Schwick: Studying is hard work and the demands have not become any less today. But I would definitely study again. On the one hand, because studying is a personal enrichment and further development for everyone. Secondly, because there are so many exciting, diverse and innovative topics and specializations - just looking at our eight faculties, I would have a hard time deciding. But honestly, I would choose mathematics again because I still find the questions of all kinds in this field exciting.

It's not your birthday, but that of Fachhochschule Dortmund - but as Rector you can make a wish on behalf of the university ...

Wilhelm Schwick:... two things. That we grow together even more as a university and at one location in order to intensify interdisciplinary teaching and research and cooperation. That is very important for the future. And I would also like to see more life at our locations, for students and colleagues to be able to be on site again, for us to teach, research and work in presence and for us to celebrate this anniversary together.
